Well after more than 15 years without firearms in my house, the family is armed again :)

I've taken the 3 oldest of the kids to the range a few times and they are learning respect and control of the handguns we now own.

Jenny was the funniest of the 3 oldest, because upon shooting the XD .40 she let out a little "eek" and she ended up killing one of the sandbags that was holding up the targets in the slight breeze that day.

The boys fared much better. Here are a couple of shots of them at the range. Mark is reloading the XD .40 and Matt is shooting my Ruger 22/45.

Man I lived 30 years in NY without getting my name in any local paper. Out here my kids have done it several times. Here in this picture Jenny along with fellow cast members made the paper. They are staring in Buena High School's performance of "Meet me in St. Louis".

My son Mark and his friends thought it was time to find some snow in AZ. So they decided it was time to hike up the mountains not far from our house to find some. After a short drive (under 45 minutes) It was apparently a 5 or 6 mile hike in each direction up the mountain but they did it! Here to prove it is a picture of my goofy son lying in the snow.

Well I got rooms for the week at Circus Circus for a decent price, and we bought tickets to see the guy who won America's got Talent a few years back Terry Fator. Man it was the funniest thing I've seen in years. He was great, and really cool. He did this whole meet and great after the show that was really nice. Anyway, it was really hot (like July in Vegas wouldn't be hot) and we walked around a bit seeing the outrageous and over the top hotels. Man the picture I took on the left was taken inside of one of them, there is a waterfall just out of sight behind them too. That's Vegas!

Credit Card Companies Suck

So I get this letter in the mail from my credit card company. As I read it they are telling me about new terms for the card. At first I think, ok no big deal. Then I see it. The interest rate they are charging me is going to DOUBLE if I agree to this. So I call them. I explain I've had this card for years and that DOUBLE the rate is unsatisfactory. So you know what this guy says? OK we'll cancel your card.... Have a nice day! JUST LIKE THAT!!! So I call again and I ask for a manager, and he says Well I can give you a promotional rate ALMOST DOUBLE CURRENT RATE for 6 months....

THIS IS BOGUS, and they should not be allowed to do this!

Well the holidays have come and gone again. This year it didn't really feel like the holidays and I didn't even really put up lights or anything. But, as usual we took photos of the kids tho send out christmas cards with. As you can see by this picture, the true nature of my monsters was shining when we took pictures. They clowned around for a while until we got the one we used for the card (this isn't it by the way) but I kinda like this one, so here it is.

Vegas Trip

Well, after 20 years the wife and I decided to go to Vegas for the first time together. I had been twice before on business. Yes I know we ALL say that, but it's true. I used to work for a company that had an office in Vegas and about 12 years ago I had been sent there for meetings.... and naturally a little casino hopping afterwards.

Anywho... Vegas was nothing like I remembered. Everything had changed so much! We saw two great shows, The Blue Man Group and Penn and Teller. It was like Broadway 2000 miles away! and the hotels are HUGE!!! The Venetian has a Gondola ride INSIDE and a MALL too!!! We walked the strip until our feet were swollen and we got some great pictures. They even have a recreation of the statue of Liberty here!

Well we had a great time, and are planning to go back. I used to think that Vegas was just for people who like to gamble, but that's sooooo not the case anymore. There's soooo much to see and do you just can't do everything!

Performance Parts

Well, as it turns out, the Vibe has a rather impressive list of after market performance parts available for it. So it's not my Mustang, But it's still a very cool little car.

So far, for about $100.00 I have modified the air intake, and added a strut tower bar. I removed the stock baffle from the air filter box, and installed a K&N air filter. The air K&N air filter gives the car a few more horsepower, and I installed a strut tower bar that makes it handle a little better through turns, (and it looks kinda cool too).

New Car

OK, so Tuesday I bought a new car, a Pontiac Vibe. See as a friend just pointed out I've been giving US automakers grief here, and I bought a Vibe... But see This is a GM / Toyota venture. It's basically a Toyota Matrix with a Pontiac logo and flair. Why did I have to buy a new car? Well the Suzuki Verona I had turned out to be the biggest piece of junk I've owned in years. It had major engine work at 25k, an Oil leak at 30k, and now it was stalling and it almost got me killed. So I called the dealer to make ANOTHER appointment, and I was told my warranty had expired (only 36 months) and I'd have to pay for this service. Well I lost it, went to the local dealers and started checking out cars. I was actually looking for a Honda or something, but the "low end" pricing you keep hearing about on TV doesn't exist unless you DON'T want air conditioning or anything. Then the sales weasel tells me about this Pontiac leftover and told me GM had a 0% finance deal going on. SO... I bought it.

OK, now if anyone from a US automaker reads this listen up, these joint ventures are good for you guys. You learn how to make a quality car, at a decent price. You should do this more often!

Hello again. I know I haven't written anything here in a while, as I've not thought of much that was blog worthy. However the other day something cool happened. I heard from an old friend I'd lost touch with for years. OK... Here's the deal.
1. I hate him... He's my age but looks GREAT, he's got a lovely family, AND he's got my Mustang.
2. I'd post pics to show you what I mean, but he asked me not too.
3. I have to admit I was jealous for about 2 seconds, but then I remembered it was MY choices that lead me in the direction I went, just as his decisions lead him down his chosen path. I can't complain, I have 4 great kids, a good job my life doesn't suck.

SO... Here's to old friends, may we all find those whom we've lost touch with, apologize to those who need it, and draw strength from the choices we've made that have made us who we are.

Vacation to New York

Well, we're back from New York. The trip was a little frustrating. The travel time and hold over in Atlanta was bad enough. The Hotel was disappointing at best and it was colder than I was hoping for, so we didn't see some of the things we wanted. Also the kids didn't get to see their Grandpa and they're a bit bummed about it.

I remembered some of the reasons that I really love New York, and I after talking with friends I also remember why I left... I don't miss the $600.00 utility bills.

OK guys, I know this is not the usual stuff I talk about here, but I can't help it. Everyone is crying about US automakers losing money, and how US buyers are killing the car makers by NOT buying American cars. Well I say THIS is the time for US automakers to wake up and smell the coffee. People buy the Hyundai and Kia and other foreign cars for lots of reasons. But there are a few BIG ones. First the US automakers have priced their cars too high. Secondly the warranty offered by US automakers sucks. Lets face it, as a buyer if I can get a good car at a LOWER price WITH a better warranty Why wouldn't I? I mean lets check it out... The Kia Sedona is well equipped and costs less than a Dodge Caravan, and has a longer warranty. 6/60 and 10/100 as opposed to 3/36. HMMMMM. No brainer. Do American automakers expect buyers to just buy American just because it's American?!? Get a grip guys!!! Make a better product, at a good price with a good warranty and PEOPLE WILL BUY IT!

Battlefield 2142

OK guys... First of all I want you to know I'm a gamer. Recently, a friend, who's name we wont mention, got me hooked on Battlefield 2142. SOOO I bought the game, and started playing only to find out that I was having problems. The game just dumped me out to the desktop without warning. SOOO Naturally I contacted EA (Electronic Arts) about the problem. Well Their tech support told me they don't support my Nvidia GT 6600 video card!!! Now this card is NOT old, and it runs other games like FEAR and Half Life2 and such without fail.

It must be nice to be able to write crappy code, and send it out for us to buy and worry about fixing it only after enough people complain... Oh yeah, they follow the Microsoft Philosophy.

The new Pool

Well, I don't have a picture yet (this is just a placeholder not my real pool), but the new pool is standing and filling with water as I type this up. I wanted to add this note for a few reasons.

First, I want to thank my friends. Without whom, the pool wouldn't be standing. I mean, this pool comes to us in boxes, like an erector set, with lousey instructions, and the pool walls are heavy...REALLY HEAVY... and without my friends who came over early on the 4th, it would not be standing.

Second, I want to thank my wife's uncle Bill. He recently moved here from LA and he's done a bunch of work in my yard, none the least of which is to level the area where the pool now sits.

Pinecar Derby results...

OK, this last week was the Pack 437 Pinecar derby. See I thought the race was next week, so I wasn't speedy in helping the boys cut their cars. I started Matt's car (on the left) the week before, but I told Mark he could wait 'till this weekend. Well the day of the race Some one reminded me of the correct race day, and I had like an hour and a half to help the boys get ready. Mark's car wasn't even cut yet. SO, I cut a simple wedge for him, and then while he painted it I tried to find weights. We didn't have any left. So we went to the pack meeting as is, well, they were out too. So the kid's cars were being weighted down with pennies and such. Well by the time they got to Mark's car they were all out of change so they used what was left. YUP a 9 volt battery. Well, after all that, both of these cars are looking kinda ugly, BUT Matt's car won the pack overall, and Mark's car took 1st place for his den. Not too shabby for these ugly pinecars huh?? But hey, the kids had fun AND they won, so that's what counts right?!?

So here we are, another year older, the holidays are here again. It all starts with Thanksgiving. A house full of people that only manage to find excuses to be with each other when a "Special Occasion" comes along, and there's more food around to eat than you want to admit. Then comes the day after, where everyone gets nuts for "Holiday Shopping" and you end up placing WAY more on your credit cards than you can really pay for. Then the kids start talking about Christmas, and they want to know when you are going to put up the tree, and start decorating the house?!? Then you have the whole start of the holiday movie season, and you just HAVE to take the kids to go see Harry Potter or some darn thing...

I just find the whole "Season" depressing.

Fear and turning 40

It was just last year that I was 39. I turned 40 this year in March. The number 40 in and of itself doesn't seem like much, in fact. But along with 40 came things I'd never expected. Aches and pains that were not there before, and a full on fear that grips me at times.
Fear that I'll not be able to do some of the things or go some of the places I really still want to.
Fear that I'll never do some of those things I did when I was younger.
Fear that my kids that are starting to grow up, will turn out like little jerks instead of the good men and women that I am hoping for.
Fear that as I get older I'm turning into my dad.
Fear that I'll never own that new Mustang I've wanted for so long.
Fear that there is a real reason not to put off seeing a lawyer about writing a will.
Fear that I'm approaching "middle age" without a retirement plan.
Fear that my 20 year marriage isn't doing well, and I have no idea what to do about it...
and yes, fear that life will be over sooner that I expected.
Fear, I never really new fear. Unfortunately now I grow more and more familiar with it. Funny what just another year can bring.

Don't use this So-called Contractor

OK, see like everything else here in Sierra Vista, you can't find a good contractor to work on your home either. They're either so damn expensive that you need to take out a second mortgage, or they just plain suck, like this guy Frank Wagener I hired to work on my house. He was cheap, but he did only "passable" work, and now he is on his way to try and cheat me out of a few hundred dollars. He Does NOT have a license to be a contractor in the state of Arizona, nor does he have a business license for the city of Sierra Vista. SO, if you have had the misfortune to deal with him, I feel your pain, if you haven't then GOOD FOR YOU!

What is it about the current economy that so many companies, especially IT companies are outsourcing help desk jobs to foreign companies?? Last night I had trouble with my DSL connection and I needed to call the ISPs help desk. (I hate calling these $7.00 and hour guys as a rule) As soon as the tech answered the phone I knew I was in trouble. The typical foreign (heavy indian accent) help desk person asked if he could help me. It was bad enough that he insisted on asking me to run through BOGUS windows troubleshooting issues, and settings even though I TOLD HIM I was a networking engineer and that the DSL modem was not syncing up with the ISP. I know they have a stupid list of things they are supposed to say, but COME ON NOW!!!! And the thing that makes it even more frustrating is that these people are so hard to understand, and they insist on running through mundane attempts to fix things that are not related to the issue at hand, and all the while insisting on using my first name OVER AND OVER again. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG! Do AOL, Earthlink, DELL, and other companies really think that they can provide decent levels of customer service by using these foreign help desk centers? NOPE!!! It all comes down to dollars and cents. They don't care if they alienate the customer, afterall they ALLREADY SOLD stuff to you... Didn't they.

Saturday Mornings

Do you remember Saturday Morning Cartoons when you were kids? Whatever happened to the GOOD quality cartoons that used to be on? Remember Superfriends, Batman, and Scooby Doo? They've been replaced by CRAP like Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. I try to do the "Quality Time" thing with the kids on Saturday mornings, but what they want to watch makes me sick. I mean even the cartoons that helped with learning like "Conjunction Junction" and such are nowhere to be found anymore. It's sad. So what can we do to improve childrens programming?

Mr. Scott's last beaming

Today we bid a fond farewell to Mr. James ‘Scotty’ Doohan who has passed at the age of 85.

He will be missed.

There are some things I did not know about Mr. Doohan:

1. He was a World War II veteran of D-Day.

2. He was shot 6 times on that day as a result he lost his right middle finger.

3. In a classic movie/television stunt, his life was saved by his sliver cigarrette case.

Gas Prices

OK... So what the hell is with Gas prices again?!? $2.33 is insane!!! I realize that I'm old enough to remember prices around $.75 per gallon but this is nuts. ALso, why haven't cars gotten more fuel efficient over the last 20 years. My old man's car was a 1965 chevy. It got 18/24. My new Hyundai is a four cyl 5speed that gets about 27 mpg. That's not a great increase in Mileage. So wtf?!?

Finding the Happy Medium

Sometimes it is so hard to find a happy medium between trying to provide discipline for the kids and trying NOT to be too strict or stern. I do NOT beleive in "Spare the rod and Spoil the child" I do believe that a certain amount of discipline is needed to raise a centered child. But A perfect example came up last night. My oldest son can be such a space cadet sometimes. I tell him to do something and he just totaly spaces it. I don't get it. Is it me, or do kids just naturally try to test their parents to see at what frustration level they'll blow?!?!? :)

OK, so I have 4 kids. Sometimes life isn't easy, and sometimes it's downright hard. At times like tonight it's damn frustrating. See I was at the pool at my Mom's apartment the other day, with the 4 kids. Naturally as kids tend to be, they were just being kids, having a good time in the pool when apparently they managed to P/O some old fart who wanted to have the pool to herself, and on this evening my 4 kids, and two other families' kids were in the pool so it was packed with kids just having fun. WELL... if there's ANYTHING old people can't stand it's kids having fun being kids. So they complained to the management and now anytime I'd like to take the kids over we have to "Call First" and let management know, so they can "keep an eye" on them to make sure they're not being rowdy. I swear, sometimes I'd like to just scream!!!

Did you ever get the feeling that no matter what you do you're not welcome in your own damn house?!? I swear, I don't know what it is about being marrried for more than just a few years that makes spouses treat each other like crap?!?

So I came home with the kids from swimming, and naturally the wife is ticked off about something, some mess the kids made before we left for swimming. SO... She waits the whole time we're out, stewing it over and sand bags us when we walk in the door. Nothing I can do or say is right at this point. SO... After I post this thing, I'm going out. It's better that way...

OK... so who was it that said that Women always want to talk?!? I don't know about most Women but talking to my wife is like pulling teeth. It seems that the older we get, and the longer we've been married the less we Talk and the more we find ways to ignore each other. What is it about long term marriages that tend to pull couples apart? Jobs, school, kids all take their toll.

Since all we really have in life are the personal relationships we have with each other, why is it that we tend to focus the LEAST amount of our time on these relationships, and most of our time on things that have no true meaning??

Ok here's my thing... I just turned 40, and I've been married for 20 years (Half my damn life) I'm tired, and I'm feeling old. This SUX! It never fails, no matter what happens in our lives it always comes down to the fact that (according to my wife) I have failed in some way. "it's your fault" Well, I'm tired of that too!

So, I may not always be right, but as my grandfather used to say "I'm never wrong" It's time for us poor slobs to wake up, smell the coffee and take our lives back into our own hands. So, that's what I'm going to try to do. Who's with me?!?!
